Safe Mode is a diagnostic boot state that starts your Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra with only the built-in system apps โ€” all third-party apps are temporarily disabled. It is the fastest way to find out whether an app you installed is causing crashes, freezes, battery drain, or other problems. This guide shows you how to enter and exit Safe Mode and how to use it to fix issues.

What is Safe Mode?

When you boot into Safe Mode, Android loads only the essential system software and pre-installed apps. Any app you downloaded is disabled until you exit. If a problem disappears in Safe Mode, you know a third-party app is the cause. If the problem persists even in Safe Mode, the issue is with the system or hardware, not an app.

When to Use Safe Mode

  • The phone is crashing, freezing, or randomly restarting
  • Severe battery drain or overheating started recently
  • An app is misbehaving and you cannot uninstall it normally
  • The launcher keeps crashing
  • You suspect malware or a rogue app
  • Persistent lag after installing something new

How to Enter Safe Mode on Galaxy S26 Ultra

Method 1 โ€” From a powered-on phone:

  1. Press and hold the Power button (or Power + Volume Down, depending on your setup) until the power menu appears.
  2. Touch and hold the "Power off" icon.
  3. A Safe Mode prompt appears.
  4. Tap Safe Mode to confirm.
  5. The phone restarts and boots into Safe Mode โ€” you will see "Safe Mode" in the bottom-left corner.

Method 2 โ€” During boot (if the phone is off or crashing):

  1. Power on the device.
  2. When the Samsung logo appears, press and hold Volume Down.
  3. Keep holding until the phone finishes booting.
  4. "Safe Mode" appears in the corner when successful.

Using Safe Mode to Diagnose Problems

Once in Safe Mode, test whether your problem still occurs:

  • Problem gone in Safe Mode? A third-party app is the culprit. Exit Safe Mode and uninstall recently added apps one by one until the problem stops.
  • Problem still happens in Safe Mode? The issue is with the system, a system update, or hardware. Consider clearing cache (see our Recovery Mode guide), or a factory reset.

How to Find the Problem App

  1. While in Safe Mode, note that the phone works fine.
  2. Exit Safe Mode (restart normally).
  3. Uninstall the most recently installed app.
  4. Test โ€” if the problem persists, uninstall the next recent app.
  5. Repeat until the problem disappears. The last app you removed was the cause.

Tip: Sort apps by install date in Settings โ†’ Apps to identify recent additions quickly.

How to Exit Safe Mode

Exiting Safe Mode is simple โ€” just restart normally:

  1. Press and hold the Power button.
  2. Tap Restart.
  3. The phone reboots into normal mode with all apps enabled.

Alternatively, hold Power + Volume Down for about 10 seconds to force a restart.

Safe Mode Won't Turn Off?

If your phone keeps booting into Safe Mode even after restarting:

  • Stuck Volume Down button: A physically stuck or dirty Volume Down button makes the phone think you are requesting Safe Mode on every boot. Clean around the button or check for a case pressing it.
  • Clear cache: Boot into Recovery Mode and wipe the cache partition.
  • Problem app: A rogue app may force Safe Mode. Uninstall recent apps.
  • Restart fully: Sometimes a complete power-off (not just restart) for 30 seconds clears it.

Safe Mode vs Other Modes

Safe Mode: Boots Android with third-party apps disabled โ€” for app troubleshooting.

Recovery Mode: Separate environment for wiping and updates.

Download Mode: For flashing firmware via Odin.

Troubleshooting

Cannot enter Safe Mode: Use Method 2 โ€” hold Volume Down right after the logo during boot.

Phone stuck in Safe Mode: Check for a stuck Volume Down button, clear cache, or uninstall a problem app.

Problem persists in Safe Mode: It is a system or hardware issue. Try clearing cache, then a factory reset if needed.
