Download Mode (also called Odin Mode) is a special boot state on Samsung devices used for flashing firmware, installing TWRP, unlocking the bootloader, and recovering from soft bricks. If you plan to root, flash stock firmware, or fix your Galaxy S26 Ultra with Odin, you need to know how to enter and exit Download Mode. This guide explains everything.
What is Download Mode?
Download Mode is a low-level interface that lets your PC communicate with the phone's bootloader through Samsung's Odin protocol. In this mode you can:
- Flash stock firmware (BL, AP, CP, CSC files) via Odin
- Install TWRP custom recovery
- Unlock or re-lock the bootloader
- Flash a Magisk-patched AP file to root the device
- Recover from a soft brick or bootloop
Download Mode does not touch your data by itself — it is simply the gateway that Odin uses to write files to your device.
How to Enter Download Mode on Galaxy S26 Ultra
The Galaxy S26 Ultra has no physical Home or Bixby button, so the method uses the volume keys plus USB:
- Power off the phone completely. Wait a few seconds.
- Press and hold Volume Up + Volume Down at the same time.
- While still holding both buttons, connect the USB-C cable to a PC (or a charger).
- A blue/black warning screen appears saying a custom OS can cause issues.
- Press Volume Up to continue into Download Mode.
You are now in Download Mode, ready for Odin. The screen shows device info like the bootloader status (OEM LOCK: ON/OFF) and Download Mode details.
Why the USB Cable is Required
On modern Samsung devices including the S26 Ultra, you cannot enter Download Mode without a USB connection. Holding Volume Up + Volume Down alone will not work — the phone specifically waits for the USB cable to be plugged in while the buttons are held. This is a security measure. Use the original Samsung cable and a working USB port for reliable results.
How to Exit Download Mode
There are two safe ways to exit:
Method 1 — Cancel and reboot:
- Press Volume Down to select "Cancel" (restart the device).
- The phone reboots normally into Android.
Method 2 — Force restart:
- Press and hold Power + Volume Down for about 7-10 seconds.
- The phone force-restarts and boots into Android.
Never pull the battery or interrupt a flash in progress. Only exit Download Mode when no flashing operation is running in Odin.

Download Mode vs Recovery Mode
These are two different modes and easy to confuse:
Download Mode (Odin Mode): For flashing firmware and files from a PC via Odin. Entered with Volume Up + Volume Down + USB.
Recovery Mode: For wiping data, clearing cache, and applying updates from the device itself. Entered with Power + Volume Up. See our Recovery Mode guide.
Troubleshooting
Cannot enter Download Mode: Ensure the phone is fully powered off first, then hold both volume buttons BEFORE and WHILE plugging in USB. Use the original cable.
Download Mode not detected in Odin: Install or reinstall Samsung USB drivers, try a different cable and USB port (rear USB 2.0 ports are more reliable).
Stuck in Download Mode: Force restart with Power + Volume Down held for 10 seconds.
"Only official released binaries are allowed" error: OEM Unlocking is not enabled, or you are trying to flash unofficial firmware on a locked bootloader.
