Samsung rolls out firmware updates via OTA (Over The Air), but sometimes the update does not arrive โ€” your device might be in a different rollout wave, your carrier may delay updates, or the OTA download fails repeatedly. In these cases, you can install the update manually using Odin and skip the wait entirely.

When to Update Manually

  • OTA update is available in other regions but not yours yet
  • OTA download fails or gets stuck
  • You want a specific firmware version that is no longer offered via OTA
  • Your device is rooted and OTA updates are blocked
  • You are switching CSC regions and want the latest firmware for the new region

Step 1: Check Your Current Firmware

Go to Settings โ†’ About Phone โ†’ Software Information. Note your current build number (e.g., S938BXXU1AXA1). This helps you verify you are actually upgrading, not sideloading the same version.

Step 2: Download the Target Firmware

Use SamFW or Frija to download the latest firmware for your model and CSC. Verify the firmware version is newer than your current build. Extract the ZIP to find BL, AP, CP, CSC, and HOME_CSC files.

Important: Check the bootloader version in the firmware filename. If the new firmware has a higher bootloader version (e.g., U2 vs your current U1), this is a one-way upgrade โ€” you cannot downgrade back to U1 bootloader afterward.

Step 3: Flash with Odin Using HOME_CSC

  1. Install Samsung USB drivers if not already installed.
  2. Boot into Download Mode (Vol Down + Vol Up + USB).
  3. Open Odin. Load: BL โ†’ BL file, AP โ†’ AP file, CP โ†’ CP file, CSC โ†’ HOME_CSC file.
  4. Using HOME_CSC preserves all your data, apps, and settings. This is equivalent to a normal OTA update but done manually.
  5. Check Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time. Click Start.
  6. Wait for PASS.

Step 4: Post-Update

After the phone reboots and boots into the updated firmware:

  1. Go to Settings โ†’ About Phone โ†’ Software Information to verify the new build number.
  2. Go to Settings โ†’ Software Update and check โ€” it should show "Your software is up to date."
  3. Apps may take a few minutes to optimize after the update โ€” this is normal.

Manual Update for Rooted Devices

If your device is rooted with Magisk, a manual firmware update is more involved:

  1. Download the new firmware.
  2. Transfer the new AP file to your phone.
  3. Open Magisk โ†’ Install โ†’ Select and Patch a File โ†’ select the new AP file.
  4. Transfer the patched AP back to PC.
  5. Flash via Odin: BL (new) + AP (Magisk patched) + CP (new) + HOME_CSC.
  6. After reboot, root is maintained on the new firmware.

Skip this if you have TWRP โ€” you can flash the Magisk ZIP through TWRP after flashing the stock update via Odin.

CSC vs HOME_CSC for Updates

HOME_CSC โ€” keeps your data (apps, photos, settings, accounts). Use this for routine updates.

CSC โ€” factory resets the device. Use this only if you are having software issues and want a clean start with the new firmware, or if you are changing your CSC region.

Troubleshooting

Odin FAIL during update: The firmware may be incompatible with your current bootloader. If you are trying to flash firmware from a different CSC region, the bootloader version might differ. Download firmware matching your current CSC.

Apps crashing after update: Clear cache partition from Recovery Mode (Power + Vol Up โ†’ Wipe Cache Partition). If issues persist, back up and do a factory reset.

Lost root after update: Re-flash the Magisk-patched AP or flash Magisk ZIP via TWRP.

Stuck on boot animation: Wait 15 minutes. If no progress, boot into Recovery and wipe cache. If still stuck, reflash the firmware with CSC (full wipe) instead of HOME_CSC.
